Indian Forest Services (IFS) is a department of the central government that deals with India’s environmental concerns. IFS officers work for both the central and state governments. This is one of the All India Services, which includes IAS, IPS, and IFS. There are two ways to become an IFS officer – the UPSC route, involving prelims, mains, and an interview, and the promotion route, where a Group B officer is promoted to a Group A IFS officer. The recruitment ratio is 73% from UPSC and 33% from promotion. Selected UPSC candidates undergo a 3-month training at LBSNAA, followed by a 2-year special training at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The highest post in the IFS is the Director General of Forest, who reports directly to the Cabinet Secretary, an IAS officer.
In the state cadre, the initial posts for IFS officers are Assistant Conservative of Forest and Deputy Conservative of Forest. Talking about the central cadre, the junior ranks include Assistant Inspector General of Forest and Deputy Inspector General of Forest. The main duties of IFS officers are to implement National Forest policies related to scientific management and environmental sustainability development. These officers are also responsible for implementing laws on forests, wildlife, the environment, and the conservation of forest biological diversity and environmental health.
The salary for an IFS officer is similar to that of an IAS officer and includes a government house, helper, and transportation, totaling 55,000 per month.
NABARD
NABARD is the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, offering Assistant Manager positions of Grade A and Grade B for B.Sc agriculture candidates. The competition for these posts is relatively low as only agriculture-related candidates can apply, reducing overall competition. To apply, candidates must have passed B.Sc with at least 50% marks, with an age limit of 21 to 30 years and extra relaxation for reserved categories.
The selection process includes a prelims, which is online and includes objective questions. Candidates who pass the prelims can apply for the mains exam, covering quantitative aptitude, computer knowledge, general knowledge, reasoning, social issues, English, agriculture, and rural development. The shortlisted candidates from the mains exam go through an interview, and the merit list is based on both mains and interview marks. RRB SO: AO
The role of a Rural Regional Bank (RRB) Agriculture Bank Officer is similar to that of a commercial bank officer, primarily focused on providing loans and maintaining public relations. These officers play a crucial role in the implementation of various agricultural schemes launched by the government, ensuring that eligible farmers benefit from these initiatives. To apply for the position of RRB Scale 2 Officer, candidates must have completed a BSc in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Veterinary Science, or Agriculture Engineering.
Although this is a central government job, postings are primarily at the rural level. Hence, proficiency in the local language is essential. Eligibility for the RRB Agriculture Officer position includes a mandatory two years of prior experience, which can be gained from financial institutions or banks. This experience requirement is specific to Scale 2 officers, with no such condition for Scale 1 officers. For those aspiring to become a Scale 3 officer, a minimum of five years of experience is mandatory.
The age limit for RRB Agriculture Officers is between 21 and 32, with additional relaxations for reserved categories as per government norms. The initial salary ranges from INR 33,700 to 39,100 per month and additional allowances are provided. The selection process for Scale 2 officers involves a single written exam followed by an interview.
